Web Presence of Iran: A Critical Evaluation

Alireza Noruzi
Scholar of the Dep. of Library and Information Science, University of Tehran, Iran

Abstract

This paper analyzes the Web presence of Iranian domains, using popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, AlltheWeb and MSN. It is concluded that Google has a better coverage of Iranian web sites, followed by Yahoo. On the other hand, MSN has the lowest coverage of Iranian web sites. Over 75 percent of all Iranian web pages are likely HTML because they are explicitly identified as HTML (HTM and HTML). Overall, the top level domain of Iran (.ir/) and the military domain (mil.ir/) have the highest and the lowest web presence respectively.
